Episode 201: On Being Hyper-Rational

We’re pleased to bring you another provocative solocast by your host, Rob Booker. In Episode 201, Rob explains how the worst traders have the worst kind of confidence. He shares a scary scenario from 12 years ago, and he poses the questions: Is day trading a total scam? Does it ruin lives? Rob tackles these questions and then carefully describes how we first ruin ourselves, then we ruin our trading accounts.

Next Rob talks about how trading is like religion, and he talks about the sorrow that comes from believing that trading is The Answer. Rob runs with this metaphor and discusses leaving the religion of trading and explains that trading is not The Answer, but something else… And finally, Rob encourages traders to become more rational — even hyper-rational.

If you’ve been feeling like you need to reflect on yourself as a trader, then this episode is definitely for you. Thanks for listening to The Traders Podcast.

So this morning I suddenly decided to play this podcast when I do yoga, instead of the usual slow songs, and it fits perfectly!

Well done, Rob!

Rob…
I love you man. Period. You are the most real person, let alone trader I’ve heard in a very long time. I really love what you’ve been doing with all of this. I recently found myself in a dire situation that took me to the point of being so serious about suicide I was literally screaming outloud in tears for myself to stay alive. You have been my therapist. I love trading, but every podcast you produce is about life. You’ve helped me to be decisive and work through the fear of my problem. You gave me perspective when no one else was around to do it. You see, I’m a truck driver with 10-14 hours of nothing but time on my hands. You helped me out of my mental feedback loop and into action. No direction was easy to choose, but “no direction at all” was literally killing my spirit and eventually me. You are real rob. That’s priceless. Thank you so much.
